Douglas Apsley National Park

Douglas Apsley National Park near Bicheno on Tasmania’s east coast, offers a mix of dry forest landscapes, rocky gorges and freshwater pools. Less visited than other Tasmanian parks, it provides a quieter setting for those interested in nature.

The park’s main features include the Apsley River Gorge, a popular destination for walking and swimming. A well-marked trail leads to a natural pool, taking about 2–3 hours for the return trip. For a longer experience, the multi-day Leeaberra Track, which traverses the park, allowing you to explore its more remote areas.

Wildlife here includes echidnas, wallabies and several bird species, including wedge-tailed eagles and white goshawks. The park’s flora varies from eucalyptus forests to small pockets of rainforest, giving it a distinct ecological character.

Facilities are limited, with basic amenities near the main walking tracks. Access to the park is straightforward from Bicheno, a nearby coastal town. While there are only primitive campgrounds within Douglas Apsley itself, there are several accommodation options in nearby Bicheno.
