Geeveston
Geeveston is a small town in Tasmania’s Huon Valley, around 60km south of Hobart. Known historically as a timber town, Geeveston today reflects its forestry heritage while also serving as a base for visitors exploring the region’s forests and national parks. With a population of just over 1,000, the town has a relaxed pace and a welcoming atmosphere.
The town’s history is visible in its timber sculptures and heritage buildings, which offer a glimpse into its logging past. Geeveston has a small collection of cafes, local craft shops and amenities, making it a convenient stop on the way to nearby natural attractions. The Forest & Heritage Centre provides information on the region’s logging history and its current focus on conservation.
Geeveston is also a gateway to the Tahune AirWalk and surrounding wilderness areas. The AirWalk, located about 30 minutes’ drive from Geeveston, allows visitors to explore the forest canopy with views over the Huon River. Further afield, the Hartz Mountains National Park offers bushwalking trails, alpine landscapes, and diverse flora. The area is also known for apple orchards and berry farms, reflecting the Huon Valley’s agricultural roots.
