Apsley Gorge Loop

Half-day hike to Apsley Gorge

Distance 6.3km | Climb 207m | Descent 207m | High point 240m

The Apsley Gorge Loop hiking trail, in Douglas Apsley National Park, offers a chance to explore a unique Tasmanian landscape. This moderate to challenging hike takes walkers through dry eucalypt forests, along the banks of the Apsley River, and into the heart of the gorge. The trail provides scenic views, swimming opportunities, and a close connection to the park’s natural environment.

The trail is a 6km loop that takes around three to four hours to complete. It is classified as moderate to difficult and requires a reasonable level of fitness and sure footing. Sturdy footwear is essential, as the terrain includes rocky paths, uneven surfaces, and a river crossing.

The trail is best tackled during dry weather, as rainfall can make the river crossing more challenging and the rocks slippery. Summer and autumn are ideal seasons for this hike. Walkers should carry plenty of water, as there are no facilities for refilling along the route.

It starts at the car park near the entrance to Douglas Apsley National Park, where walkers can find information boards and basic facilities.

Starting the trail
The trail begins with a gradual descent through dry eucalypt forest. The path is well-marked but uneven in places, with exposed roots and rocks. This section provides opportunities to observe native plants and birds, including wattlebirds and honeyeaters.

After approximately 30 minutes, the trail reaches the Apsley River. Here, the landscape shifts, offering views of clear pools and rocky riverbanks. Walkers will need to cross the river at this point. Depending on recent rainfall, the water level may vary from shallow to moderate. It’s advisable to wear sturdy, waterproof shoes and be cautious of slippery rocks.

Following the Aspley River
Once across the river, the trail follows its banks into the gorge. This section is more rugged, with large boulders and uneven surfaces. Walkers should take care when navigating this area, especially after rain when rocks may be wet and unstable. The gorge provides a dramatic contrast to the open forest, with towering cliffs and narrow passages.

Midway through the hike, walkers will encounter a large pool within the gorge. This is a popular spot to take a break, swim, or simply enjoy the scenery. The water is usually cool, even in summer, and the area offers shade from overhanging trees.

Returning to the trailhead
The trail then loops back towards the starting point, climbing out of the gorge through a series of switchbacks. This ascent can be physically demanding, particularly in warmer weather. Walkers should bring sufficient water and rest as needed.

The final section of the trail leads back through the forest, returning to the car park. Along this stretch, hikers may spot wallabies or echidnas, particularly in the early morning or late afternoon.
