Bark Mill Tavern
Pub and bakery
The Bark Mill Tavern combines a dining experience with a glimpse into local history. The tavern is part of a complex that includes a historic bark mill, a bakery and a museum (although the museum is currently closed).
The tavern
The Bark Mill Tavern itself has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, making it a popular choice for casual dining. The tavern specialises in pub-style meals, with a focus on Tasmanian produce. Options include locally sourced seafood, such as oysters and fish, along with traditional pub fare like burgers and steaks. The tavern also serves a range of Tasmanian beers and wines.
The decor reflects both the tavern’s coastal setting and its historical connections, with timber finishes and rustic features. The dining area is spacious, accommodating both small groups and families. The atmosphere is casual, making it a comfortable stop for visitors exploring Swansea and nearby areas. The tavern also has an outdoor seating area, allowing you to enjoy your meal with views of the town and the surrounding landscape.
The Bark Mill Museum
The Bark Mill dates back to the 1800s and was once essential to Tasmania’s tanning industry. Bark mills were used to grind black wattle bark, which was prized for its high tannin content, used in leather production. The Swansea Bark Mill is the last of its kind in Tasmania. Its preservation allows visitors to see machinery and techniques that were common in the 19th century but are now largely forgotten. The attached museum features exhibits about the process and its significance to Tasmania’s development, offering a look at the lives of workers who once relied on this industry.
