Burnie Airport (BWT)

Alternative gateway to Tasmania

Burnie Airport is the main airport in the north-west region of Tasmania and it provides a great alternative to the airports in Devonport, Launceston, and even Hobart.

The airport is served by Qantaslink, Rex and Sharp Airlines with scheduled flights to King Island, Launceston and Melbourne. Melbourne is the airport’s busiest route.

It’s a small airport with basic passenger amenities. A single terminal building houses check-in areas and waiting spaces. Dining options are limited to a single cafe/bar, which serves light meals.

The airport does not have any lounges for gold Frequent Flyer members, although there are a few quiet spaces to wait and Wi-Fi internet access is available throughout the terminal.

The airport is 18km from Burnie and the location is ideal if you’re visiting destinations in the north and west of the state. While it is 18km from Burnie, it’s less than a 10-minute walk into the town centre of Wynyard where there are plenty of options for places to eat and drink prior to catching your flight.

Transport connections

While there aren’t any public transport connections directly outside the terminal, Burnie Airport is surprisingly well connected by public transport and it’s only an eight-minute walk from the terminal to a bus stop in Wynyard’s town centre with hourly services to Burnie.

This is just a regular local bus rather than the overpriced SkyBus service at Hobart Airport and it makes Burnie a much better alternative to flying into Devonport or Launceston Airports, which have no public transport connections at all.

It is also a good option if you’re driving with several car rental companies operating from the airport. Flying into Burnie and picking up a rental car is a good option if you’re heading to Cradle Mountain or Strahan, which are a 1½ or a 2½-hour drive away.
