Dove Lake Circuit
2–3-hour walk with views of Cradle Mountain
Distance 5.7km | Climb 240m | Descent 240m | High point 988m
The Dove Lake Circuit is a 6km walking trail that provides an accessible way to experience the national park’s natural beauty, offering varied scenery and views of Cradle Mountain. Suitable for most fitness levels, the trail is a popular choice for visitors who don’t have the time or stamina needed to complete the Overland Track.
The loop trail around Dove Lake takes two to three hours to complete. It is clearly marked and well-maintained. The path begins and ends at the Dove Lake car park, making it a convenient option for a day visit.
Several points along the trail provide unobstructed views of Cradle Mountain. The reflections of the mountain in the lake are particularly striking in calm weather. Interpretive signs offer information about the geology and ecology of the area.
The trail is graded as easy to moderate, with some uneven terrain and steps. The boardwalk sections can become slippery in wet weather so sturdy footwear with good grip is recommended.
Carry water and snacks, as there are no facilities on the trail itself.
Weather conditions in the park can change quickly. Bring layers, waterproof clothing and sun protection.
Dove Lake Car Park–Glacier Rock
The walk starts at the car park, where an information board provides details about the route. Public toilets and a small shelter are located here. The track begins with a gentle descent towards the lake, with Cradle Mountain in view.
Early in the walk, you will encounter Glacier Rock, a large glacially polished boulder. This is a good spot to pause and take in the view of the lake and surrounding peaks. The surface of the rock shows visible striations left by ancient glaciers.
Boardwalk sections and temperate rainforest
Much of the trail is on boardwalks, which protect the environment and make walking easier. These sections wind through temperate rainforest, where mosses and lichens cover rocks and tree trunks. King Billy pines, native to Tasmania, are a feature of this part of the walk.
Ballroom Forest
The trail continues through the Ballroom Forest, a sheltered area filled with myrtle beech trees. The forest has a serene atmosphere, with dappled light filtering through the canopy. This section can feel cooler, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
Boatshed
One of the most recognisable landmarks on the circuit is the historic boatshed. Built in 1940, the timber structure sits near the lake’s shore. It is a popular spot for photographs and offers insight into the area’s history.
Final stretch
As the circuit nears completion, the path rises slightly, offering elevated views of Dove Lake. The trail eventually loops back to the car park, completing the walk.
