Tahune AirWalk

Explore the forest canopy

The Tahune AirWalk, in the Tahune Forest Reserve, is a treetop walkway offering visitors a unique perspective on the region’s temperate rainforest. Suspended high above the forest floor, the AirWalk allows people to experience Tasmania’s lush greenery from the canopy level, with panoramic views of the Huon and Picton Rivers.

The Tahune Forest Reserve, where the AirWalk is located, has long been part of Tasmania’s conservation efforts. While the area was once used for timber production, shifting priorities towards conservation and tourism led to the development of the AirWalk. Opened in 2001, the AirWalk has helped the area transition from a forestry-based economy to one centred on eco-tourism.

The Tahune AirWalk is designed to give visitors an understanding of the ecological importance of Tasmania’s old-growth forests. It is part of a broader initiative to promote the sustainable use of forest resources, showcasing the natural beauty of the Huon Valley while supporting regional tourism. The AirWalk and its surrounding trails highlight Tasmania’s efforts to balance conservation with visitor access, allowing people to learn about and experience the forest ecosystem firsthand.

What to see at the Tahune AirWalk

The Tahune AirWalk extends over 600m into the canopy and reaches a height of 50m above the forest floor at its highest point. Visitors walking along the steel walkway can take in wide views of the surrounding forest and rivers. The path concludes at a cantilevered platform that juts out over the Huon River, offering views of the valley and the river far below. This platform is a popular photo spot, providing an almost unobstructed view of the landscape.

Along the walkway, interpretive signage provides information about the trees, including the iconic eucalyptus and myrtle beech species, as well as other flora in the area. These signs offer insights into the life cycle of the forest and the adaptations of various plants and animals to the temperate climate.

In addition to the AirWalk itself, the reserve has several ground-level trails that allow visitors to explore the forest at a more intimate level. The Huon Pine Walk (20 minutes) is a short loop, showcasing the slow-growing, long-lived Huon pine trees that are native to Tasmania. Another path, the Swinging Bridges Walk (1 hour), takes visitors across suspension bridges over the Picton and Huon Rivers, providing additional perspectives of the riverside environment.

Visiting the Tahune AirWalk

The Tahune AirWalk is in the Tahune Forest Reserve, around 70 kilometres southwest of Hobart and 30km from Geeveston. The drive from Hobart takes about 1½ hours via the Huon Highway and Geeveston.

It is really only practical to visit if you’re driving and it is not accessible via public transport.

The AirWalk and its surrounding trails are generally open daily and there is an admission fee, which also gives you access to other walks in the park.

Visitor facilities include a visitor centre with displays about the forest’s ecosystem as well as a cafe and a gift shop.

The AirWalk takes a little under an hour, although it’s a long way to come just for the AirWalk and many people also walk some of the other trails in the park. Allow one hour for the Swinging Bridges Walk and 20 minutes for the Huon Pine Walk.
