Tasmanian Devil Unzoo
See Tasmanian devils
The Tasmanian Devil Unzoo, formerly known as the Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park, on the Tasman Peninsula offers a unique opportunity to learn about Tasmania’s wildlife in a natural environment. Unlike traditional zoos, this conservation-focused attraction allows animals to roam freely in open habitats. Visitors can see Tasmanian devils, kangaroos and other native species up close while learning about the challenges facing these animals in the wild.
The Tasmanian Devil Unzoo was founded to support conservation efforts for the endangered Tasmanian devil. This iconic species has faced significant threats from habitat loss and the devastating Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD), a contagious cancer that has drastically reduced populations since the 1990s.
The Unzoo’s innovative approach focuses on reducing barriers between humans and animals. This aligns with the concept of an “unzoo”, which prioritises natural behaviours, conservation education and ecosystem preservation over traditional enclosures. The facility also contributes to research and breeding programmes aimed at securing the future of Tasmanian devils.
What to see at the Tasmanian Devil Unzoo
The Tasmanian Devil Unzoo offers several experiences that highlight native wildlife and the surrounding environment.
Although the Unzoo is home to a variety of wildlife, Tasmanian devils are a key attraction here. Visitors can see these carnivorous marsupials in habitats designed to mimic their natural environment. Feeding sessions provide insights into their behaviour and the challenges they face in the wild.
Free-roaming kangaroos and wallabies are also a popular drawcard. Visitors can feed these animals in designated areas and can also see them moving freely through the grounds. Birdlife is also abundant, with opportunities to spot species such as parrots, honeyeaters and raptors.
The Unzoo’s gardens showcase native Tasmanian plants, offering a chance to learn about the local flora. Interpretive signage provides information on how these plants support the region’s ecosystems.
In addition to wildlife, the Unzoo features art installations inspired by Tasmania’s natural and cultural heritage. These works aim to deepen visitors’ understanding of the environment and its significance.
