Wineglass Bay Lookout

Tasmania’s most popular hike

Distance 2.65km | Climb 157m | Descent 157m | High point 203m

Wineglass Bay Lookout is one of the most popular walking trails in Tasmania. The trail offers visitors a chance to experience the rugged beauty of the Freycinet Peninsula, with views of Wineglass Bay, known for its crescent-shaped beach and turquoise waters. This hike is manageable for most walkers and provides an opportunity to appreciate the natural environment of this remote part of Australia.

The trailhead begins at the car park near the National Park Visitor Centre. This is off Freycinet Drive, approximately 2½ hours by car from Hobart or Launceston. Visitors must purchase a valid National Parks pass, available at the centre or online. Amenities at the car park include toilets and picnic facilities, but there are no water refills, so ensure you bring adequate supplies.

Starting the trail
The first section of the trail is well-marked and consists of compact gravel paths. It starts with a gradual incline through coastal heathland. Interpretive signs along the route offer information about the park’s flora and fauna. You may notice native plants such as banksias and eucalypts, as well as the occasional wallaby or birdlife.

The ascent
The gradient steepens as you approach the middle section of the trail. This part includes a series of stone steps and rocky sections. While not technically challenging, the incline can be strenuous for some walkers. Sturdy footwear is recommended to manage the uneven surfaces.

As you climb, the vegetation begins to change. The coastal heath gives way to sparse trees and exposed rock formations. Pause at small clearings to catch your breath and enjoy glimpses of Coles Bay and the Hazards mountain range.

Reaching the lookout
The trail culminates at a purpose-built platform with panoramic views of Wineglass Bay. The lookout sits at an elevation of 200 metres, providing a dramatic perspective of the bay and surrounding landscapes. Clear days offer the best visibility, though the view remains impressive in most weather conditions.

This is the most crowded section of the trail, especially between late morning and mid-afternoon. To avoid the crowds, consider starting your hike early in the day or later in the afternoon. Spend some time here to rest, take photographs and enjoy the scenery.

Optional extension to Wineglass Bay Beach
For those seeking a longer hike, an optional extension leads down to Wineglass Bay Beach. The descent is steep and involves more stone steps, taking about 30 minutes to reach the shoreline. This part of the trail is less well-maintained and requires extra care. The return hike to the car park from the beach is more strenuous, so allow additional time and energy.

The beach itself is remote and unspoiled, with no amenities. Visitors should carry all essentials, including food, water and sun protection. Swimming is possible, but the water can be cold, and there are no lifeguards.

Practical details

The total return distance for the lookout trail is approximately 3km and takes 1½–2 hours to complete. The extended route to the beach adds another 2.6 kilometres and can take an additional 1½ hours each way. Walkers should check the weather forecast before setting out, as conditions can change rapidly.

Access to Freycinet National Park is via sealed roads and the closest bus stop is in Coles Bay, 3.5km from the trailhead. Most visitors arrive by private vehicle or organised tour. The nearest petrol station and general store are in Coles Bay, 10 minutes from the park entrance. Mobile phone reception is unreliable within the park, so plan accordingly.

The Wineglass Bay Lookout trail is suitable for individuals with a moderate level of fitness. Families with children can manage the hike, but the steep sections may be challenging for younger walkers. Dogs and other pets are not permitted within the national park.
